The authors prove the conjectural relationship between the certain special cubic Hodge integrals of the Gopkumar-Marino-Vafa type and GUE correlators. They show that the partition function of these Hodge integrals is a tau function of the discrete KdV hierarchy. Here, they mainly use the Virasoro constraints to show this equivalence. It may be more interesting to consider the equivalence of the bilinear equations.
