The author is concerned with the inverse spectral problem for the classical Sturm-Liouville operator generated by the differential expression \(-y^{\prime\prime}(x)+q(x)y(x)\) with \(0<x<\pi\), and separated boundary conditions. It is well known that when \(q\in L(0,\pi)\), the spectrum is discrete, and the Gelfand-Levitan theory (1951) can uniquely reconstruct the potential \(q\) from the spectral function \(\displaystyle\Gamma(\lambda)=\sum_{\lambda\leq \lambda_{n}}\frac{1}{\alpha_{n}}\), where \(\alpha_{n}\) are the norming constants. Later \textit{B. M. Levitan} and \textit{M. G. Gasymov} [Usp. Mat. Nauk 19, No. 2(116), 3--63 (1964; Zbl 0145.10903)], improved the 1951 theorems, and also proved that \(q\) can be reconstructed from two given spectra \(\{\lambda_{n},\mu_{n}\}_{n\geq 1}\). In this paper the author shows that one can still reconstruct \(q\) from \(\{\lambda_{n},\gamma_{n}\}_{n\geq 1}\), where \(\gamma_{n}\) are norming constants from another spectrum. The proof makes use of the Titchmarsh-Weyl function.
