Let \(S = k[x_1,\ldots,x_n]\) denote the polynomial ring in \(n\) variables over the field \(k\). The pinched Veronese ring \(\mathcal{P}_{n,d,\textbf{m}} \subseteq S^{(d)}\) is the subring of the \(d\)-th Veronese ring \(S^{(d)}\) where the monomial \(x_1^{m_1} \cdot \ldots \cdot x_n^{m_n}\) with \(\textbf{m} = (m_1,\ldots,m_n) \in \mathbb{N}^d\) and \(m_1 + \cdots m_n = d\) is removed. There is an interest in homological properties of pinched Veronese rings. For instance, by the reviewer (see [Arch. Math. 30, 391--397 (1978; Zbl 0417.14040)]) there is a study when it is a Buchbsbaum ring. Furthermore, in answering Sturmfels' question \textit{G. Caviglia} [J. Algebr. Comb. 30, No. 4, 539--548 (2009; Zbl 1213.13003)] showed that \(\mathcal{P}_{3,3,{1,1,1}}\) is Koszul. In the present paper the authors compute the depth of the pinched Veronese ring, characterize when it is Cohen-Macaulay and give conditions when it is Gorenstein resp. a complete intersection. With their Cohen-Macaulay characterization they reprove and slightly extend results by \textit{O. Greco} and \textit{I. Martino} [J. Commut. Algebra 13, No. 3, 347--360 (2021; Zbl 1485.13038)]. The second main results are concerned when the underlying field is of positive prime characteristic. They give a complete picture about the \(F\)-singularity type of the pinched Veronese ring \(\mathcal{P}_{n,d,\textbf{m}}\). There are also bounds for the Hartshorne-Speiser-Lyubeznik numbers and the Frobenius test exponents of pinched Veronese rings. They conclude with some results and open questions for affine semigroup rings obtained by removing larger subsets of the Veronese generators.
