The paper under review proves a pair of results in Arakelov geometry. First, the authors prove that an arithmetic \(\mathbb{R}\)-divisor is numerically trivial if and only if it is a linear combination of principal divisors. This enables them to deduce their main theorem, which says that for an arithmetic variety \(X\) that is generically smooth and geometrically integral over a number field \(K\), we have \[ \dim(\overline{CH}^1_{\mathbb{R}}(X))=\mathrm{rk}(\mathrm{Alb}(X_K)(K) + \mathrm{rk}(\mathrm{NS}(X_K))+1+\sum_{p\in B}(f_p-1) \] where \(B=\mathrm{Spec}(\mathcal{O}_K)\) and \(f_p\) is the number of irreducible components of the fibre over \(p\). In particular, the rank of the arithmetic Chow group can be computed in terms of purely geometric quantities.
