The relation between the mixed Hodge structures and isolated singularities was first announced by P. Deligne in 1974. Since the article by \textit{J. Steenbrink} [Invent. Math. 31, 229--257 (1976; Zbl 0303.14002)], a mixed Hodge structure on the cohomology of the Milnor fibre of an isolated hypersurface singularity has been studied in various aspects. On the other hand, in [\textit{A. Dimca} and \textit{A. Libgober}, Tôhoku Math. J. (2) 58, No. 4, 549--564 (2006; Zbl 1149.32016)], the authors showed the existence of a mixed Hodge structure on the Alexander modules of the hypersurface complement. In this survey article, the authors study the Hodge structure of Alexander invariants associated with smooth complex algebraic varieties. In particular, they present more details for the proof of the main result given in the article [``Mixed Hodge structures on Alexander modules'', Mem. Am. Math. Soc. (in press)] in which a natural mixed Hodge structure on the torsion part of the Alexander modules of a smooth connected complex algebraic variety is constructed. They relate the mixed Hodge structures on the torsion parts of the Alexander modules with the previously described mixed Hodge structures and give many nice geometric consequences. They also point out that the torsion part of the homology Alexander module of a smooth complex algebraic variety is a semisimple module.
