The Hill-Hopkins-Ravenel norm \(N_{e}^{S^1}(R)\) of a structured ring spectrum \(R\) is one possible model for the topological Hochschild homology of \(R\). This viewpoint was used by \textit{V. Angeltveit} et al. [Doc. Math. 23, 2101--2163 (2018; Zbl 1417.55015)] in their construction of a cyclotomic structure on \(\mathrm{THH}(R)\). Generalizing this description of \(\mathrm{THH}\), they defined the \textit{twisted} topological Hochschild homology \(\mathrm{THH}_{C_n}(R)\) of a \(C_n\)-ring spectrum \(R\) to be the relative norm \(N_{C_n}^{S^1}(R)\). The name \textit{twisted} comes from the observation that this norm can be built from a twisted version of the cyclic bar construction. In the paper under review, the authors carry out first computations of twisted \(\mathrm{THH}\) in examples of interest. One main tool that they develop is an equivariant version of the Bökstedt spectral sequence. Under suitable assumptions, it computes equivariant \(E\)-homology groups of twisted \(\mathrm{THH}\)-spectra from equivariant Hochschild homology groups. This is for example applied to get information about the \(C_2\)-relative \(\mathrm{THH}\) of the real bordism spectrum \(\mathrm{MU}_{\mathbb R}\). Another approach to compute twisted \(\mathrm{THH}\) uses Thom spectra. \textit{M. Behrens} and \textit{D. Wilson} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 146, No. 11, 5003--5012 (2018; Zbl 1409.55010)] and \textit{J. Hahn} and \textit{D. Wilson} [Geom. Topol. 24, No. 6, 2709--2748 (2020; Zbl 1459.55008)] identified equivariant Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectra on \(\underline{\mathbb F}_2\) and \(\underline{\mathbb Z}_{(2)}\) as Thom spectra. Using an equivariant version of a theorem by \textit{A. J. Blumberg} et al. [ibid. 14, No. 2, 1165--1242 (2010; Zbl 1219.19006)], the authors describe the twisted \(\mathrm{THH}\) of these Thom-spectra. This leads to an equivariant identification of the \(C_2\)-spectra underlying \(\mathrm{THH}_{C_2}(H\underline{\mathbb F}{}_2)\) and \(\mathrm{THH}_{C_2}(H\underline{\mathbb Z}{}_{(2)})\).
