On compact Lie groups smooth functions and distributions \(f\) are known to be characterized by growth conditions of the Hilbert-Schmidt norms \(\|\hat f(\phi)\|_{HS}\) of the Fourier transform of \(f\) with respect to the joint eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator of the coordinate functions of the irreducible representations \(\phi\) of the group. This criterion is used to derive sufficient conditions for a function to be smooth on \(G=G_1\times G_2,\ G_1,G_2\) compact Lie groups or to be a distribution w.r.t growth conditions of the derivatives w.r.t the first variable of the Fourier transform of \(f\) with respect to the second variable: \(\partial^\beta\hat f(x_1,\eta)\), \(x_1\in G_1,\ \eta\in\hat G_2\). This result is then applied to the global solvability of differential equations of type \(Lu=f\) on \({\mathbb T}^1\times {\mathbb S}^3\) with \(L=\partial_t+a(t)X\) for a left invariant vector field \(X\) on \(\mathbb S^3\).
