Let \(G\) be an almost-connected Lie group. The authors study \(G\)-equivariant index theory for proper co-compact actions with various applications. One of the main results of the paper states that if \(K\) is a maximal compact subgroup of \(G\) and \(M\) is a compact manifold with a \(K\)-invariant Riemannian metric of positive scalar curvature, then \(G\times_K M\) has a \(G\)-invariant Riemannian metric of pointwise-positive scalar curvature. Among other results, rigidity theorems for certain \(\operatorname{Spin}^c\)-Dirac operators on almost-complex manifolds with a proper \(G\)-action, generalizing results of Hattori, are proved, and Poincaré duality between \(G\)-equivariant \(K\)-homology and \(K\)-theory is established.
