Let \(X,Y\) be real Banach spaces and let \(S_X,S_Y\) be the corresponding unit spheres. A classical question attributed to D.~Tingley asks: is every surjective isometry of the spheres a restriction of a linear isometry of the spaces \(X,Y\)? Spaces \(X\) for which the answer is affirmative are called spaces with the Mazur-Ulam property. This interesting paper exibits this property for \(c_0\)- and \(\ell^\infty\)-sums. If every component space is of dimension at least~2, there are at least two spaces in the collection, and all are strictly convex with smooth points dense (this happens, for example, when the spaces are separable or Asplund), then the direct sums have the Mazur-Ulam property.
