The authors study the existence of positive solutions of the singular semilinear elliptic problem \(-\Delta u= a(x) g(u)+ \mu b(x)u^p\) in \(\Omega,\) \(u= 0\) on \(\partial\Omega\), where \(\Omega\) is a smooth bounded domain in \(\mathbb{R}^N\) \((N> 1)\), \(g: (0,+\infty)\to\mathbb{R}\) is \(C^1\) and behaves as \(s^{-\beta}\) \((0<\beta< 1)\) at the origin, and like \(s^q\) \((0< q< 1)\) at infinity; \(0< p< 1\); \(a,b\) are weight functions singular close to the boundary \(\partial\Omega\) and behaving like \(d(x)^{-r}\) \((0< r<1)\) where \(d(x)= d(x,\partial\Omega)\); \(\mu\) is a real parameter. Under some additional assumptions, existence of a positive solution (in the Sobolev space \(H^1_0(\Omega)\)) is proved. The proof combines existence of a positive subsolution with variational arguments for a truncated associated problem on a sequence of domains converging to \(\Omega\). Uniqueness is proved under some condition on the derivative \(g'\).
