In three variables, the possible Hilbert functions of artinian graded Gorenstein algebras are completely described: they are the so-called Stanley-Iarrobino (SI) sequences, and the description is due to R. Stanley. For more variables, many papers have been written on the subject of possible Hilbert functions. A special case of great interest is to study the situation for low socle degree, namely to study those artinian Gorenstein algebras whose Hilbert function is zero starting in degree 5. This is the first situation where the Hilbert function can be non-unimodal. The first non-unimodal example is again due to Stanley, who produced an artinian Gorenstein algebra with Hilbert function \((1,13,12,13,1)\); \textit{J. Migliore} and \textit{F. Zanello} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 145, No. 1, 1--9 (2017; Zbl 1350.13014)] showed that this is the smallest possible: even \((1,12,11,12,1)\) and \((1,13,11,13,1)\) do not occur. The approach introduced in that paper was used to obtain similar results for higher socle degree by \textit{J. Ahn} and \textit{Y.-S. Shin} [J. Algebra 477, 239--277 (2017; Zbl 1365.13028)]. \textit{J. Migliore} et al. [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 136, No. 8, 2755--2762 (2008; Zbl 1148.13011)] also proved (and generalized) a conjecture of Stanley about limiting behavior of artinian Gorenstein algebras with non-unimodal Hilbert function of socle degree 4, as the number of variables goes to infinity. In the paper under review, the authors extend these results. They study what they call full Perazzo algebras, show that their Hilbert functions are minimal, and use this to give a new proof of Stanley's conjecture for the asymptotic behavior of the Gorenstein Hilbert functions. They end with a conjecture about the asymptotic behavior of artinian Gorenstein algebras presented by quadrics.
