Let \(X\) be a Banach space and \(B_X\) its unit ball. We say that the dual \(X^*\) of \(X\) admits a uniformly simultaneously continuous retraction if there is a retraction from \(X^*\) onto \(B_{X^*}\) which is both uniformly continuous in the norm topology and continuous in the weak\(^*\) topology. A Banach lattice \(X\) is said to be uniformly monotone if, for all \(\varepsilon >0\), we have \[ M(\varepsilon) = \inf\{\big\| |x| + |y|\big\| - 1:\|x\|=1, \|y\| \geq \varepsilon\} > 0. \] In the paper under review, it is proved that, if a real Banach space (resp., complex Banach space) \(X\) has a normalized unconditional Schauder basis with unconditional basis constant \(1\) and if \(X^*\) is uniformly monotone (resp., uniformly complex uniformly convex), then \(X^*\) admits a uniformly simultaneously continuous retraction. The authors apply this result to prove that for the real Banach space \(C_0(K)\), where \(K\) is a locally compact Hausdorff space, the pair \((X,C_0(K))\) has the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobàs property for operators whenever \(X^*\) admits a uniformly simultaneously continuous retraction. As the real space \(C_0(S)^*\) admits a uniformly simultaneously continuous retraction for every locally compact metric space \(S\) (see Corollary \(2.10\)), it follows that the pair \((C_0(S), C_0(K))\) has the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobàs property for operators. It is also shown that for a family of Banach spaces \((X_i)\) whose duals are separable, the dual \(X^*\) of the \(\ell_p\)-sum \(X=[\bigoplus X_i]_p\), \(1 \leq p < \infty\), admits a uniformly simultaneously continuous retraction under certain convexity assumptions on each \(X_i^*\). A similar result, but under milder assumptions, is also established for \(c_0\)-sums.
