The authors study the structure of tensor and Cuntz-Pimsner algebras. Tensor algebras of \(C^*\)-correspondences were studied by \textit{P. S. Muhly} and \textit{B. Solel} in a series of papers beginning with [J. Funct. Anal. 158, No.~2, 389--457 (1998; Zbl 0912.46070)], which has led to a non-commutative generalization of function theory. The structure of this paper is described in the Introduction as follows: ``In Section 2, we review some preliminary material. In Section 3, we describe the subproduct system of a stochastic matrix, and in Theorem 3.8 we provide an effective isomorphism theorem for such objects. In Section 4, we review some basic facts about the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra of a subproduct system, and in Section 5 we characterize the Cuntz-Pimsner \(C^*\)-algebra of the subproduct system of essential stochastic matrices. Finally, in Section 6 we begin the study of the tensor algebra of a general subproduct system, culminating in the main results for the case of stochastic matrices in Section 7.''
