The authors study the following Hammerstein integral equation \[ u(t)= (\mathfrak P u)(t)+ \lambda\int_0^a K(t,s) (\mathfrak Q u)(s)\, ds, \text{ a.e. } t\in [0,a], \] as well as the corresponding Volterra-Hammerstein equation \[ u(t)= (\mathfrak P u)(t)+ \int_0^t K(t,s) (\mathfrak Q u)(s)\, ds, \text{ a.e. } t\in [0,a], \] and provide conditions under which these equations have a solution \(u\in L^p([0,a],E)\) where \(E\) is a real Banach space. Here \(\mathfrak P\) and \(\mathfrak Q\) are continuous Volterra operators from \(L^p([0,a],E)\) to itself, \(K\) is a strongly measurable function on \([0,a]\times[0,a]\) with values in the space of continuous linear operators on \(E\) and \(\lambda \in \mathbb R\). In addition they consider the Fredholm functional equation \[ u(t)= u_0(t)+ \int_0^a F(t,s,(\mathfrak Q u)(s))\, ds, \quad t\in [0,a], \] where \(u_0\in C([0,a],X)\), \(F:[0,a]\times [0,a]\times Y \to X\) is a Carathéodory function and \(\mathfrak Q:C([0,a],X)\to L^\infty([0,a],Y)\) is a continuous Volterra operator. Measures of non-compactness together with appropriate assumptions are used in the proofs to verify the assumptions of the Mönch fixed-point theorem which gives the desired conclusions when applied to suitable operators in each case.
