In this paper the authors study the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with cylindrical symmetry. A unique strong solution and a class of weak solution are constructed under a general condition on the heat conductivity coefficient and for general initial data. Then the vanishing shear viscosity limit is studied and an estimate on the thickness of the boundary layer is obtained. Further, the optimal \(L^1\) convergence rate is obtained in terms of shear viscosity for angular and axial velocity components.
