Let \(D\) be a bounded domain in \(\mathbb C^n\), equipped with a Kähler metric \(g\) which is associated with the Kähler form \(\omega= \frac{i}{2\pi} \partial \bar \partial \varphi\). For \(\alpha>0\) we have the Hilbert space \({\mathcal H}_\alpha\) of holomorphic functions that are square-integrable in the weighted volume form \(e^{-\alpha \varphi} \omega^n\). This induces the weighted Bergman kernel \(K_\alpha (z,\bar z)\). To these data the Rawnsley's function \(\varepsilon_\alpha (z):= e^{-\alpha \varphi(z)}K_\alpha (z, \bar z)\) is associated. The metric \(g\) is called balanced if \(\varepsilon_\alpha\) is a positive constant. The aim of the article under review is the construction of nonhomogeneous bounded domains that admit a balanced Kähler metric. For this purpose the generalized Cartan-Hartogs domains are investigated. Let \(\Omega \subset \mathbb C^n\) denote an irreducible bounded symmetric domain of genus \(p\) in its Harish-Chandra realization. The generic norm of \(\Omega\) is defined as \(\displaystyle N_\Omega (z, \xi):= \big(V(\Omega) \,K_\Omega (z,\bar \xi )\big)^{-1/p} \), where \(V(\Omega)\) is the volume and \(K_\Omega\) the Bergman kernel of \(\Omega\). Next let \(k \) be a natural number and \(\Omega_1,...,\Omega_k\) denote irreducible bounded symmetric domains in \(\mathbb C^{d_i}\), \(1\leq i \leq k\), and \(d_0\) a positive integer. For \(\mu=(\mu_1,...,\mu_k) \in \mathbb R^k\) the generalized Cartan-Hartogs domain \(\displaystyle \Big(\prod_{j=1}^k \Omega_j \Big)^{B^{d_0}}\) is defined by \[ \Big(\prod_{j=1}^k \Omega_j \Big)^{B^{d_0}} (\mu):= \bigg\{ (z,w) \in \prod_{j=1}^k \Omega_j\times B^{d_0}\,:\,\|w\|^2 < \prod_{j=1}^k N_{\Omega_j} (z_j, \bar z_j)^{\mu_j} \bigg\}, \] where \(\|\cdot \|\) is the standard hermitian norm on \(\mathbb C^{d_0}\) and \(B^{d_0}\) the unit ball in \(\mathbb C^{d_0}\). These domains are in general non-homogeneous. The candidate for a balanced Kähler metric \(g\) is the one with potential \[ \Phi (z,w):= - \ln \bigg( \prod_{j=1}^k N_{\Omega_j} (z_j, \bar z_j)^{\mu_j}-\|w\|^2\bigg). \] The authors obtain a comprehensive result that characterizes the balancedness of the metric \(\alpha g\) by means of equations and inequalities between \(\alpha\) and explicit expressions that involve the rank, the dimension, the genus, and the characteristic multiplicities of the \(\Omega_1,...,\Omega_k\).
