The authors consider the following singularly perturbed problem \[ \begin{cases}\varepsilon\Delta u -V(r)u+n(n-2)u^p=0,\\ u>0 \quad\text{in } {\mathbb R}^n, \quad u\in H^1({\mathbb R}^n). \end{cases} \] Here \(V(r)\) is a radially symmetric positive function such that the function \(r^{n-1}[V(r)]^{\sigma}\) has a nondegenerate critical point \(r_0>0\), where \(\sigma={p+1\over p-1}-{1\over 2}\). The main result of the paper is that for the critical exponent \(p={n+2\over n-2}\), for the dimensions \(n=3,4,5\), and for \(\varepsilon\) sufficiently small, the equation has a type of solutions that are superpositions of layered solutions and bubbles at the origin. The formulation of this problem is derived from the work done in \textit{A. Ambrosetti, A. Malchiodi} and \textit{W.-M. Ni} [Commun. Math. Phys. 235, 427--466 (2003; Zbl 1072.35019)].
