From the abstract: ``This paper is primarily intended as an introduction for mathematicians to some of the rich algebraic combinatorics arising in for instance conformal field theory (CFT). It tries to refine, modernise and bridge the gap between (the) papers [\textit{E. Bannai}, J. Algebr. Comb. 2, No. 4, 327--344 (1993; Zbl 0790.05098) and \textit{J. Fuchs}, ''Fusion rules in conformal field theory,'' Fortsch. Phys. 42, 1--48 (1994)]. Our paper is essentially self-contained, apart from some of the background motivation (\dots) and examples (\dots) which are included to give the reader a sense of the context. Detailed proofs will appear elsewhere \dots''. To a Rational Conformal Field Theory (RCFT) a modular data and a fusion ring is assigned. The basics and examples of these are recalled in detail. As examples are given lattices, affine Kac-Moody algebras, finite groups, RCFT, TFT, vertex operator algebras, subfactors, etc. Also considered are modular invariants and nonnegative integer (NIM) representations of the fusion ring.
