Given a commutative ring \(A\), there is a Chern character \(ch : K_n(A) \rightarrow HN_n(A)\) from \(K\)-theory to negative cyclic homology. In the case \(A\) contains the rational numbers, the authors prove that the Chern character preserves the decomposition coming from Adams operations. This generalizes previous results for the nilpotent case [\textit{J.-L. Cathelineau}, K-Theory 4, No. 6, 591-606 (1991; Zbl 0735.19005)] and for the case \(n\leq 0\) [\textit{C. Weibel}, C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I 317, No. 9, 867--871 (1993; Zbl 0798.19003)]. In fact, the authors prove such a result more generally for schemes essentially of finite type over a field of characteristic zero. The method consists in reducing the problem to the nilpotent case using a generalization of Grothendieck's infinitesimal cohomology. Because Cathelineau's proof of the nilpotent case relied on an incorrect result of an unpublished preprint of Ogle and Weibel, a correction to this preprint is given in the appendix.
