Many attempts are currently made to extend the theory of support varieties from group algebras to more general setups. When working with arbitrary finite dimensional algebras, there is no trivial module and thus no analogue of group cohomology. As a substitute, sometimes Hochschild cohomology is used, which forces the use of a finite generation hypothesis. Here, a similar approach is introduced, which in addtition allows for a twist by an automorphism of the given algebra. This may cause losing graded commutativity, as is shown by an example. There are, however, non-trivial situations, where this approach can be made to work, and where some standard properties such as Dade's lemma can be established.
