Conditions under which a pointwise precompact sequence of functions, with values in a commutative metric semigroup, contains a pointwise convergent subsequence are investigated in terms of the joint modulus of variation. The additional algebraic structure of the target space leads to the relaxation of the assumptions needed in previously known generalizations of Helly's theorem. Five interesting examples showing sharpness of the results and an application to the almost everywhere convergence of Banach space valued functions is also given.
