A pre-Nichols algebra, defined by \textit{A. Masuoka} [J. Algebra 320, No. 1, 1--47 (2008; Zbl 1157.17005)] firstly, is a braided Hopf algebra between T(V), the tensor algebra, and \(\mathcal{B}(V)\), the Nichols algebra, where \(V\) is a braided vector space. In this paper, the author defines and studies an interesting class of pre-Nichols algebras, which the author calls distinguished pre-Nichols algebras. Comparing it with a Nichols algebra \(\mathcal{B}(V)\) of diagonal type, a distinguished pre-Nichols algebra \(\widetilde{\mathcal{B}}(V)\) is the braided Hopf algebra which preserves all relations in \(\mathcal{B}(V)\) except the ``nilpotent relation'', i.e., \(E_{\alpha}^{N_{\alpha}}=0\). The author shows that such a distinguished pre-Nichols algebra is really ``distinguished'': 1) It has Lusztig isomorphism. 2) It has PBW basis with the same generators as \(\mathcal{B}(V)\). 3) It has finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension and is Noetherian. 4) It has some similar properties to De Concini-Procesi's quantum groups. Several conjectures and questions are also posed in this paper. A quite attractive conjecture states that \(\widetilde{\mathcal{B}}(V)\) is minimal among the pre-Nichols algebras (of \(V\)) which is Noetherian of finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension. All questions focus on the further developing of the classical Lie theory (or the quantum group theory of De Concini-Procesi) to distinguished pre-Nichols algebras and their doubles. This is a distinguished paper on distinguished pre-Nichols algebras.
