Principal subspaces of some affine Lie algebra modules were studied by several authors and used to compute character formulas related to Rogers-Ramanujan-type identities. In a previous work the author of the paper under review investigated the analogous notion for the quantum affine algebra \(U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_{n+1})\) using certain vertex operator found by Y. Koyama. These relations lacked a vertex algebraic interpretation. This is provided in the present paper in two different ways. First, recalling elements of quantum calculus, the author recalls the Frenkel-Jing representations of \(U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_{2})\) and, via operators \(\hat{x}(z)\) and \(\hat{\mathcal{Y}}(z)\), he provides bases for principal subspaces \(W(\Lambda_0)\) and \(W(\Lambda_1)\). Next, he defines a vertex algebra \(W_0\) and a module for it \(W_1\). Through the use of a new concept of nonlocal \(\underline{q}\)-vertex algebras he also gives basis for two appropriate subspaces \(W_{0,\underline{q}}\) and \(W_{1,\underline{q}}\). Although, described by different conditions on the monomial indices, these bases all correspond to the sum sides of the classic Rogers-Ramanujan identities as is shown by using appropriate diagrams and an explicit bijection.
