A motivic infinite cyclic cover is defined to be an element in the Grothendieck ring \(K_0(Var^{\hat\mu}_{\mathbb C})\) of algebraic \(\mathbb C\)-varieties endowed with a good action of the pro-finite group \(\hat\mu = \lim \mu_n\) of roots of unity. This element corresponds to an infinite cyclic cover associated to a punctured neighborhood of a simple normal crossing divisor \(E\) in a complex quasi-projective manifold \(X\). The authors prove that such a motivic cover is a birational invariant. They then also consider some motivic invariants, for which standard Betti realizations exist. In conclusion, the authors explain that their construction generalizes the notion of the motivic Milnor fiber of a hypersurface singularity introduced in [\textit{J. Denef} and \textit{F. Loeser}, Prog. Math. 201, 327--348 (2001; Zbl 1079.14003)], as well as the notion of the motivic Milnor fiber of a rational function in the sense of \textit{M. Raibaut} [Rev. Mat. Complut. 26, No. 2, 705--734 (2013; Zbl 1334.14010)], \textit{Y. Matsui} and \textit{K. Takeuchi} [Int. Math. Res. Not. 2013, No. 8, 1691--1746 (2013; Zbl 1314.32044)], etc.
