Let \(D\) be a positive square-free integer, \(K={\mathbb Q}(\sqrt{-D})\) and \(\tau_{-D}\) be the quadratic Dirichlet character associated to \(K/{\mathbb Q}\). Let \(\chi_D\) be a canonical Hecke character of \(K\) (see for instance [\textit{B. H. Gross}, Arithmetic on elliptic curves with complex multiplication. Lect. Notes Math. 776. Berlin etc.: Springer-Verlag (1980; Zbl 0433.14032)]) and consider, for any square-free integer \(d\) coprime to the discriminant of \(K\), the quadratic twist of \(\chi_D\) given by \[ \chi_{D,d} = \chi_D\cdot \tau_d \circ N_{k/{\mathbb Q}}\, . \] The aim of the paper is to extend some previous results by \textit{D. E. Rohrlich} [Am. J. Math. 104, 517--543 (1982; Zbl 0503.12008)] and by \textit{F. Rodriguez Villegas} and \textit{T. Yang} [Duke Math. J. 98, No. 3, 541--564 (1999; Zbl 0965.11045)]. The main result is the following Theorem. Let \(h_K\) be the class number of \(K\) and \(k\) be a non-negative integer such that \((2k+1,h_K)=1\). Then there exists a constant \(M=M(k)\) such that, if \[ \sqrt{D} > \frac {64}{\pi} d^2(\log |d| + M(k))\;, \] then \[ L\left(\tfrac 12, \chi_{D,d}^{2k+1}\right) >0 \iff \varepsilon \left(\tfrac 12, \chi_{D,d}^{2k+1}\right) = + 1\, , \] where \(\varepsilon \left(\frac 12, \chi_{D,d}^{2k+1}\right)\) is the global root number of \(\chi_{D,d}^{2k+1}\). To deal with the case \(D\equiv 1\pmod 4\), for which canonical Hecke characters do not exist, the authors modify the definition of canonical characters and prove a similar statement. A consequence of the main theorem is the following Corollary. Let \(D\not\equiv 1 \pmod 4\) be a positive square-free integer. Let \(d\) be a square-free integer coprime to the discriminant of \(K={\mathbb Q}(\sqrt{-D})\). Assume that the global root number of the canonical elliptic curve \(E(D)^d\) (CM by an order \({\mathcal O}\) of \(K\)) is one and that \[ \sqrt{D} > \frac {64d^2}{\pi} \, \log |d|\, . \] Then \(E(D)^d\) has Mordell-Weil rank \(0\) over the ring class field \(H_{\mathcal O}\) of \(\mathcal O\) over \(K\).
