The theory of Fourier multipliers and Bochner-Riesz means in the setting of the standard Laplace operator on \(\mathbb R^n\) is related to the so-called sphere restriction problem of the Fourier transform, which consists in finding the pairs \((p,q)\) for which \(R_\lambda \), given by \(R_\lambda (f)(w)=\hat f(\lambda w)\) for \(w\in S^{n-1}\) and \(\lambda>0\), is a bounded operator from \(L^p(\mathbb R^n)\) into \(L^q(S^{n-1})\). The study of the restriction theorem for \(q=2\) turns out to be equivalent to the inequality \(\|dE_{\sqrt{-\Delta}}(\lambda)\|_{p\to p'}\leq C \lambda^{n(1/p-1/p')-1}\) for all \(p\in [1, (2n+2)/n+3)]\) where \(dE_{\sqrt{ -\Delta}}\) is the spectral measure of \(\sqrt {-\Delta}\) and, as usual \(1/p+1/p'=1\), and its solution is due to \textit{E. M. Stein} [Harmonic analysis: Real-variable methods, orthogonality, and oscillatory integrals. Princeton University Press (1993; Zbl 0821.42001)] and \textit{P. A. Tomas} [Bull. Am. Math. Soc. 81, 477--478 (1975; Zbl 0298.42011)] who showed that it holds for \(1\leq p\leq 2(n+1)/(n+3)\). The authors consider abstract non-negative selfadjoint operators on \(L^2(X)\), where \((X,d,\mu)\) is a metric space with the volume satisfying the doubling condition and under the assumption of the finite-speed propagation property, i.e., for any \(t>0\) it holds that \(\langle \cos(t\sqrt L)f_1,f_2\rangle=0\) whenever \(f_k\in C(X)\) with \(\operatorname{supp}(f_k)\subseteq B(x_k, \rho_k)\) for \( k=1,2\) and \(\rho_1+\rho_2+t<d(x_1,x_2)\). The authors introduce some properties which are the corresponding replacements in the abstract setting to several formulations that hold in \(\mathbb R^n\) and for classical operators, such as Stein-Thomas restriction type or Sogge's spectral cluster type condition [\textit{C. D. Sogge}, Ann. Math. (2) 126, 439--447 (1987; Zbl 0653.35068)]. A~non-negative selfadjoint operator \(L\) is said to satisfy \((ST^q_{p,s})\) for \(1\leq p,q,s\leq \infty\) if, for every \(R>0\) and all Borel functions \(F\) with \(\operatorname{supp}F\subset [0,R]\), the following inequality holds: \[ \left\|F(\sqrt L)P_{B(x,r)}\right\|_{L^p(X)\to L^s(X)}\leq C V(x,r)^{1/s-1/p} (Rr)^{n(1/p-1/s)}\left\|F(R\cdot)\right\|_{L^q(\mathbb R)} \] for all \(x\in X\) and \(r\geq 1/R\), where \(V(x,r)=\mu(B(x,r))\) and \(P_B\) stands for a projection by multiplication by \(\chi_B\). Similarly, a selfadjoint operator \(L\) is said to satisfy \((SC^{q,k}_{p,s})\) for \(k\in \mathbb N\), \(1\leq p,q,s\leq \infty\) if, for every \(N\in \mathbb N\) and all even Borel functions \(F\) with \(\operatorname{supp}F\subset [-N,N]\), the following inequality holds: \[ \left\|F(\sqrt L)P_{B(x,r)}\right\|_{L^p(X)\to L^s(X)}\leq C V(x,r)^{1/s-1/p} (Rr)^{n(1/p-1/s)}\left\|F(N\cdot)\right\|_{N^k\mspace{-2mu},\mspace{2mu}q} \] for all \(x\in X\) and \(r\geq 1/N\), where \[ \|F\|_{N\mspace{-2mu},\mspace{2mu}q}=\left(\frac{1}{2N}\sum_{l=1-N}^N \sup_{\lambda\in \left[\frac{l-1}{N}, \frac{l}{N}\right)}|F(\lambda)|^q\right)^{1/q}. \] In the paper, several results for operators with finite speed propagation property and satisfying \((ST^q_{p,s})\) or \((CS^{q,k}_{p,s})\) for some \(1\leq p<s\leq \infty\) and \(1\leq q\leq \infty\) are shown. The authors prove that their restriction type condition, which is shown to hold for operators satisfying dispersive or Strichartz estimates, implies sharp spectral multipliers and endpoint estimates for the Bochner-Riesz summability. They also obtain new spectral multiplier results for several second order differential operators and recover some known ones, including Schrödinger operators with inverse square potentials on \(\mathbb R^n\), the harmonic oscillator, elliptic operators on compact manifolds, and Schrödinger operators on asymptotically conic manifolds.
