The authors study the Cauchy functional equation, which is of fundamental importance in the theory of regular variation. Although their methods are primarily analytic, they are also able to rely on ideas from the dynamics of continuous flows, where one can additionally take advantage of algebraic methods. Their study involves the Goldie functional equation and the Goldie functional inequality. Appropriate conditions that may be imposed to deduce a functional equation starting with a functional inequality are explored. The main focus is on quantifier weakening and automatic continuity. Finally, their study extends to the context of Beurling regular variation along with the related Gołąb-Schinzel equation.
