Let \(I_n(x)\) denote the basic interval of order \(n\) containing \(x\in (0,1]\) in their \(\beta\)-expansion, together with its length \(|I_n(x)|\). If we set \(L_n=L_n(\beta, x)=(-1/n)\log_{\beta}|I_n(x)|\), the main proposition states that for every \(\lambda(\beta)>0\), the extremely irregular set \[ E=\{x\in (0,1]\mid \limsup_{n\to\infty} L_n=1+\lambda(\beta)\} \] is residual. Several consequences follow, such as the determination of the Hausdorff and boxing dimensions of \(E\), as well as other similar claims on the irregular set \[ D=\{x\in (0,1]\mid \limsup_{n\to\infty} L_n>\liminf_{n\to\infty} L_n\}. \] It might be of interest to recall a somewhat analog of these results on extremely non-normal numbers [\textit{L. Olsen}, Math. Proc. Camb. Philos. Soc. 137, No. 1, 43--53 (2004; Zbl 1128.11038)].
