The authors consider the two-dimensional scattering problem for the Helmholtz equation on the exterior of a circular domain with radius one. The Dirichlet boundary condition is prescribed on the boundary of this domain and the Sommerfeld condition is prescribed at infinity. The behavior of the solution of this problem is studied by using a bounded domain where the artificial exterior boundary is a sufficiently large circle and is used to prescribe a ``Sommerfeld-like'' radiation condition. In particular, the high-frequency asymptotic behaviour of the scatter field is obtained by a singular perturbation analysis and a boundary layer corrector technique for the limit solution of the scattering problem as the wave number goes to infinity.
