The authors study the set of discrete eigenvalues \(\{\lambda_n\}\) (the discrete spectrum) of complex double infinite Jacobi operators \(J(\{a_n\},\{b_n\},\{c_n\})\) under the condition \[ \lim_{|n|\to\infty} a_n=\lim_{|n|\to\infty} c_n=1, \quad \lim_{|n|\to\infty} b_n=0, \] or, equivalently, \(J-J_0\) is a compact operator (where \(J_0\) is defined by \(a_k=c_k\equiv 1\), \(b_k\equiv 0\)). The main result provides the rate of convergence of \(\lambda_n\) to the essential spectrum of \(J_0\), that is \([-2,2]\). Theorem. Let \(J-J_0\) belong to the Schatten class \(S_p\), \(p>1\). Then, for each \(\varepsilon>0\), \[ \sum_{\lambda\in\sigma_d(J)}\,\frac{\text{dist}(\lambda,[-2,2])^{p+\varepsilon}}{|\lambda^2-4|^{1/2}}\leq C(p,\varepsilon)\,\|J-J_0\|^p_{S_p}. \] The result for \(p=1\) is also available. The above estimate can be regarded as a ``near-generalization'' of the Lieb-Thirring inequalities for selfadjoint Jacobi operators due to \textit{D. Hundertmark} and \textit{B. Simon} [J. Approximation Theory 118, No.~1, 106--130 (2002; Zbl 1019.39013)]. An example of a nonselfadjoint Jacobi operator which is a rank two perturbation of the free Jacobi operator \(J_0\), with arbitrarily large number of eigenvalues, is constructed.
