This paper surveys and extends recent work on the connections between formal orthogonal polynomials, complex Jacobi continued fractions (\(J\)-fractions) and spectral properties of the underlying infinite complex symmetric tridiagonal (Jacobi) matrix. Special emphasis is given to unbounded recurrence coefficients. New results include a generalization of some recent results of the author [J. Approximation Theory 99, No. 2, 369-408 (1999; Zbl 0931.30002)]. Some open questions are also discussed.
