When implementing causality in some bond graph models, zero-order causal paths, i.e.~algebraic loops, appear. A method to detect and to open these algebraic loops by means of break variables is proposed. In compensation, new constraint equations appear that are associated to each break variable. The developed algorithms are based on an iterative method that decides which variables are the ones that break most algebraic loops simultaneously. Hence, the number of break variables is the optimum. These algorithms are part of a software that automatically obtains the DAE systems derived from the bond graph models.
