The authors study the weighted orthogonal Ricci curvature on compact Kähler and Hermitian manifolds. The weighted orthogonal Ricci curvature on a Kähler manifold is \(\mathrm{Ric}^{\perp}_{\alpha,\beta}:TM^{1,0}M\rightarrow \mathbb R\) defined by \[\mathrm{Ric}^{\perp}_{\alpha,\beta}=\frac{\alpha}{|X|^2}\mathrm{Ric}_{\omega}(X,\overline{X})+\beta HSC_{\omega}(X),\] where \(HSC\) is the holomorphic sectional curvature. If \((M,\omega)\) is a Hermitian manifold, they define four Ricci curvatures \(\mathrm{Ric}^i_{\omega}\) related with the Chern connection on \((M,\omega)\). They also define \[\mathrm{Ric}^i_{\alpha,\beta}=\frac{\alpha}{|X|^2}\mathrm{Ric}^i_{\omega}(X,\overline{X})+\beta HSC_{\omega}(X).\] The authors prove several theorems characterizing compact Kähler and compact Hermitian manifolds in terms of the weighted orthogonal Ricci curvature, for example: Theorem. Let \((M,\omega)\) be a compact Kähler manifold with \(\mathrm{Ric}^{\perp}_{\alpha,\beta}>0\) for some \(\alpha > 0 > \beta\). If, moreover, \(3 \alpha + 2 \beta>0\), then M is projective. Theorem. Let \((M,\omega)\) be a compact Kähler manifold with \(\mathrm{Ric}^{\perp}_{\alpha,\beta}>0\) for some \(\alpha > 0\) and \(\beta <0\). If, moreover, \((p +1)\alpha +2\beta \ge 0\), then the Hodge number \(h^{p,0}\) is \(0\).
