The paper investigates Hermitian Yang-Mills (HYM for short) connections on pullback bundles with respect to adiabatic classes on the total space of holomorphic submersions with connected fibers. Under some technical assumptions on the graded object of a Jordan-Hölder filtration, the authors obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for when the pullback of a strictly semistable vector bundle will carry an HYM connection, in terms of intersection numbers on the base of the submersion. Together with the classical Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau correspondence, they deduce that the pullback of a stable (resp., unstable) bundle remains stable (resp., unstable) for adiabatic classes, and settle the semi-stable case. The paper is organized as follows. Section 1 is an introduction to the subject and summarizes the main results. Section 2 deals with the HYM equation and holomorphic submersions. The authors introduce the notions of HYM connections and slope stability, together with some general results, and the structure one obtains on sections and tensors from a holomorphic submersion with connected fibers. They start to specialize the discussion to holomorphic submersions with connected fibers. Section 3 is devoted to slope stability and adiabatic classes. Here, the authors introduce the notion of adiabatic slopes and discuss when the pullback of a strictly unstable bundle is strictly unstable for adiabatic polarisations. They calculate slope formulae with respect to adiabatic classes on holomorphic submersions with connected fibers. In particular, they obtain criteria implying unstability or strict semistability for the pullback of a non-stable bundle for adiabatic classes. Section 4 deals with producing HYM connections in the stable case. The authors prove the main result in the stable case via constructing approximate solutions to the HYM equation. Section 5 is devoted to the more technical semi-stable case. In Section 6, the authors investigate their results in various situations.
