The paper deals with the one-dimensional 2mth-order Dirac type operator \[ D\psi=B\frac{d\psi}{dx}+\Omega(x)\psi,\quad \psi(x)=(\psi_1(x),\psi_2(x),\dots,\psi_{2m}(x))^T, \] where \[ B=\begin{pmatrix} 0&T_1\\ T_2&0 \end{pmatrix},\quad T_1=\mathrm{diag}(b_1, b_2,\dots, b_m),\quad T_2=\mathrm{diag}(b_{m+1}, b_{m+2},\dots, b_{2m}) \] \((b_1= b_2=\dots= b_m>0, \quad b_{m+1}= b_{m+2}=\dots= b_{2m}<0)\), \(\Omega(x)=\mathrm{diag}(p_1(x),p_2(x),\dots,p_{2m}(x))\), and \(p_i(x)\) \((i=1,\dots,2m)\) are complex-valued integrable functions defined on a finite interval \(G=(a,b)\). Using the method developed by V.A. Il'in the author obtain estimates for the root vector functions, and criteria for the Bessel property and the unconditional basis property of the root vector function systems of this operator in the space \(L^{2m} _2 (G)\). The root vector functions are understood in a generalized sense, i.e., regardless of the boundary conditions.
