Let \((\bar{M}^{2n+1}, \bar{g}, \bar{\alpha }, \bar{J})\) be a contact metric manifold and \((M^n, g)\) be a compact Legendre submanifold with second fundamental form \(B\) and mean curvature vector \(H\). Its volume is defined as \(V(M):=\int _Md\mu _g\) with \(d\mu _g\) the volume form of the induced metric \(g\) on \(M\). Then \(M\) is called a \textit{contact stationary Legendrian} (CSL) submanifold if is a stationary point of the volume functional with respect to contact deformations. The Euler-Lagrange equation providing CSL submanifolds is \(\operatorname{div}_g(\bar{J}H)=0\). The main result of the paper is: Theorem. Suppose \(M^n\), \(n\geq 2\), is a closed CSL submanifold of the sphere \(\mathbb{S}^{2n+1}\) and \[|B|^2\leq \frac{(n-1)(n+2)}{2}+\frac{n^2+3n-2}{2n^2}|H|^2-\frac{(n-1)(n-2)\sqrt{4n+|H|^2}}{2n^2}|H|.\] (1) If \(n=2\), then \(M\) is either totally geodesic or a Calabi torus. (2) If \(n\geq 3\), then \(M\) is either minimal or a Calabi product Legendrian immersion of a totally geodesic Legendrian immersion and a point. The appendix contains examples which illustrate that the above Theorem is optimal.
