      Let \(X\) be a real Banach space and \(x,y\in X\). The Birkhoff-James orthogonality relation \(\perp_B\) is defined as follows: \[\Nx\perp_B y \ \ :\Leftrightarrow \ \ \|x+\lambda y\|\geq \|x\| \ \ \forall \lambda\in \mathbb{R}\N\]\NA point \(x\in X\) is called left-symmetric if for every \(y\in X\) with \(x\perp_B y\) one also has \(y\perp_Bx\). Right-symmetric points are defined analogously.\N\NThe author investigates left-symmetric and right-symmetric points in the \(p\)-direct sum of two Banach spaces, where \(p\in [1,\infty)\), \(p\neq 2\).
