This nice article sheds new light on the early history of the journal \textit{Nature} under the editorship of its founder Norman Lockyer. Relying on the extant correspondence, the author discusses Lockyer's motivation for establishing a new journal in 1869, as well as the issues he had to face in the role of the editor, including the relations to the publisher Alexander Macmillan. The article also offers an interesting comparison with other contemporary scientific journals, and explains why Richard Arman Gregory was finally chosen to take over the editorship of \textit{Nature} in 1919.
