      Let \(H\) be a Hilbert \(C^*\)-module and \(L(H)\) denote the set of all adjointable operators on \(H\).\N\NThe authors introduce a new notion of quasi-projection pair \(( P, Q )\), in which \(P\) is a projection, while \(Q\) is an idempotent satisfying the following conditions:\N\[\NPQ^*P = PQP, \quad PQ^* ( I - P) = - PQ( I- P),\N\]\Nand \N\[\N( I - P) Q^* ( I - P ) = ( I - P )Q( I - P ).\N\]\NThey show that for every non-projection idempotent \(Q \in L( H )\), there exist a projection \(m(Q) \in L( H )\) and an invertible operator \(W \in L( H )\) such that \(( m(Q), Q)\) is a quasi-projection pair satisfying \N\[\NQ = W^{-1} m(Q)W,\quad \| I-W\|< 1.\N\]\NIn particular, \((m (Q) , Q)\) regarded as idempotents, are homotopy equivalent. They also show that the mapping \(Q\mapsto m(Q)\) is norm-continuous.
