Property (T) for a discrete, countable group \(\Gamma\) is a rigidity property about unitary representations of \(\Gamma\) on complex Hilbert spaces.\N\NThis rigidity property has been extended to other classes of Banach spaces by \textit{U. Bader} et al. [Acta Math. 198, No. 1, 57--105 (2007; Zbl 1162.22005)]. For example, the cases of \(L^p\)-spaces are of particular interest.\N\NThe goal of this article is to show that two definitions of property (T) for the class of \(L^p\)-spaces are actually the same. These two definitions are easily seen to be the same in the case of Hilbert spaces. The difficult direction is to prove that if the existence of a net of almost invariant unit vectors \((\xi_i)\) implies the existence of a unit invariant vector, then the existence of a net of almost invariant unit vectors \((\xi_i)\) implies the existence of a net of unit invariant vectors \((\eta_i)\) such that \(||\xi_i-\eta||\to 0\).\N\NThe result was already known for any class \(\mathcal{E}\) that is stable under quotients and consists of super-reflexive Banach spaces stable under taking complemented subspaces.\N\NThe proof uses an open mapping theorem for Polish groups and strong ergodicity for some probability measure-preserving action.
