The author investigates the permanence of competitive Lotka-Volterra systems with distributed delays. They give necessary and sufficient conditions for all subsystems of the problem to be permanent. The results extend previous ones due to \textit{J. Mierczyński} and \textit{S. J. Schreiber} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 267, No. 1, 329--337 (2002; Zbl 1017.34052)] and \textit{S. Ahmad} and \textit{A. C. Lazer} [Ann. Mat. Pura Appl. (4) 185, Suppl. 5, S47--S67 (2006; Zbl 1162.34329)].
