The authors study the index reduction (or completion) of quasi-regular differential algebraic equations using methods from commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. Their main result is that any such system can be transformed into a system consisting of an under-determined ordinary differential equation of first order and a single polynomial equation. The transformed system is generically (i.e. away from a singularity variety) equivalent to the original system and its number of variables is determined by the order of the original system. The transformation can be done effectively by means of a Kronecker-type algorithm with bounded complexity. It is based on the notion of a parametric geometric resolution studied by \textit{E. Schost} [Appl. Algebra Eng. Commun. Comput. 13, No. 5, 349--393 (2003; Zbl 1058.68123)]. The method is demonstrated explicitly for the example of a pendulum. The authors also show how the solutions of the original and the transformed system are related.
