Semigroups of valuations on local rings (Q841526)

The authors consider here noetherian local rings with rational valuations. They construct examples with various properties, such as an example with rank 2 valuation and value group \(\mathbb Z^2\) and non-finitely generated semigroup. They further investigate cases of semigroups of order type \(\omega^k\), proving, inter alia that if \(S\) is a well-ordered subsemigroup of the non-negative part of \(\mathbb R^n\), \(n\in\mathbb N\) (with the lex order) and \(S\) is of ordinal type \(\leq\omega^k\), \(k\in\mathbb N\), then \(S\) has ordinal type \(\leq\omega^n\). Section 4 deals with subsemigroups of \(\mathbb Q_+\). They give an example showing that the semigroups of noetherian rings are not always rationally finitely generated. Additional (counter)examples are given in sections 7 and 8, such as an example with no residue field extensions.
