In [Am. J. Math. 121, No. 2, 359--413 (1999; Zbl 0923.46069)], \textit{X. Jiang} and \textit{H. Su} constructed an important unital, separable, simple, infinite-dimensional nuclear C\(^*\)-algebra \(\mathcal{Z}\), which is known as the Jiang-Su algebra. Since then, \(\mathcal{Z}\)-absorption and tracial \(\mathcal{Z}\)-absorption have gradually emerged as research hotspots in the theory of operator algebras.\N\NIn this paper, the authors extend the notion of tracial \(\mathcal{Z}\)-absorption to the simple nonunital case and investigate its permanence properties. The class of simple tracially \(\mathcal{Z}\)-absorbing C\(^*\)-algebras is large, encompassing the Razak-Jacelon algebra, simple purely infinite C\(^*\)-algebras, and so forth. Based on techniques from the reduced free products of von Neumann algebras, they obtain the first purely infinite examples of tracially \(\mathcal{Z}\)-absorbing C\(^*\)-algebras that are not \(\mathcal{Z}\)-absorbing. Moreover, they show that the Cuntz semigroup of a simple tracially \(\mathcal{Z}\)-absorbing C\(^*\)-algebra is almost unperforated and that the algebra itself is weakly almost divisible.\N\NThese results extend existing conclusions to the nonunital case and carry significant implications for future research in this field.
