The Bohr compactification of an arithmetic group

From MaRDI portal

The author studies the structure of the Bohr compactification \(\mathrm{Bohr}(\Gamma)\) for an arithmetic subgroup \(\Gamma\) of an algebraic group \(G\) over the rationals. When \(G\) is unipotent, he shows that \(\mathrm{Bohr}(\Gamma)\) can be identified with the direct product \(\mathrm{Bohr}(\Gamma^{Ab})_0 \times \mathrm{Prof}(\Gamma)\), where \(\Gamma^{Ab} = \Gamma/[\Gamma, \Gamma]\) is the abelianization of \(\Gamma\), \(\mathrm{Bohr}(\Gamma^{Ab})_0\) is the connected component of \(\mathrm{Bohr}(\Gamma)\) and \(\mathrm{Prof}(\Gamma)\) is the profinite completion of \(\Gamma\). In the general case, using a Levi decomposition \(G = \mathbf{U} \rtimes \mathbf{H}\) (where \(\mathbf{U}\) is unipotent and \(\mathbf{H}\) is reductive), the author shows that \(\mathrm{Bohr}(\Gamma)\) is isomorphic to the semi-direct product of a certain quotient of \(\mathrm{Bohr}(\Gamma \cap \mathbf{U})\) with \(\mathrm{Bohr}(\Gamma \cap \mathbf{H})\). Finally, the author describes \(\mathrm{Bohr}(\Gamma)\) when \(G\) is simple and has higher \(\mathbf{R}\)-rank.
