The planar \(L_{p}\)-Minkowski problem for \(0<p<1\) (Q2356770): Difference between revisions

Given a convex body \(K\) (i.e., a compact convex set with non-empty interior) in \({\mathbb R}^n\) and \(0<p<1\), the \textit{\(L_p\)-surface area measure} \(S_{K,p}\) on the sphere \(S^{n-1}\) is defined by \[ S_{K,p}(\omega)=\int_{x\in\nu_K^{-1}(\omega)}\langle x,\nu_K(x)\rangle^{1-p} d\mathcal{H}^{n-1}(x), \quad\text{for each Borel } \omega\subset S^{n-1}. \] Here, \(\nu_K\) is the map defined by letting \(\nu_K(x)\), for \(x\in\partial K\), be an exterior unit normal vector to \(\partial K\) at \(x\) (which is unique for \(\mathcal{H}^{n-1}\)-almost all \(x\in\partial K\)), and \(\mathcal{H}^{n-1}\) stands for the (\(n-1\))-dimensional Hausdorff measure. The limit cases \(p=1\) and \(p=0\) correspond with the classical surface area measure and the so-called cone volume measure, respectively. Then, the \textit{\(L_p\)-Minkowski problem} asks for the necessary and sufficient conditions on a finite Borel measure \(\mu\) on \(S^{n-1}\) to be the \(L_p\)-surface area measure of an \(n\)-dimensional convex body. In the recent years, many important contributions to this problem have been obtained for different values/intervals of \(p\in{\mathbb R}\). In the paper under review, the authors solve the planar \(L_p\)-Minkowski problem in full generality for \(0<p<1\). More precisely, they prove the following elegant and major result: for \(p\in(0,1)\), a non-trivial bounded Borel measure \(\mu\) on \(S^1\) is the \(L_p\)-surface area measure of a planar convex body if and only if the support \(\text{supp}\,\mu\) does not consist of a pair of opposite vectors.
