The nowadays classical spaces \(B^s_{p,q} (\mathbb R^n)\) and \(F^s_{p,q} (\mathbb R^n)\) with \(s\in \mathbb R\) and \(0<p,q \le \infty\) have been generalized in many directions. This includes variable parameter functions \(s(x)\), \(p(x)\), \(q(x)\) for \(x\in \mathbb R^n\) and generalizations of them as well as so-called two-microlocal versions. The paper deals with such types of generalized function spaces and their characterizations in terms of maximal functions and so-called non-smooth atoms.
