A celebrated result of \textit{C. L. Fefferman} and \textit{E. M. Stein} [Acta Math. 129, 137--193 (1972; Zbl 0257.46078)] states that the Hardy spaces $H^1_{\mathcal{P}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, $H^1_{\mathcal{H}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and $H^1_{\mathcal{R}}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ defined via the Poisson and the heat maximal operator and the Riesz transform define the same space, usually denoted $H^1(\mathbb{ R}^n)$. \textit{R. R. Coifman} in the one-dimensional case [Stud. Math. 51, 269--274 (1974; Zbl 0289.46037)] and \textit{R. H. Latter} [Stud. Math. 62, 93--101 (1978; Zbl 0398.42017)] in higher dimensions proved that $H^1(\mathbb{ R}^n)$ admits an atomic characterisation. In [Stud. Math. 129, No. 1, 31--50 (1998; Zbl 0903.42011)] and [Proc. R. Soc. Edinb., Sect. A, Math. 132, No. 1, 25--43 (2002; Zbl 1005.42013)] \textit{S. Boza} and \textit{M. J. Carro} proved an analogue of the above results on $\mathbb{ Z}^n$. In the paper under review, the authors investigate whether similar properties hold on a class of locally finite graphs. More precisely, if $\mathcal{G}$ is a connected locally finite graph possessing the Cheeger isoperimetric property, the authors prove that contrary to the Euclidean case, the Hardy spaces $H^1_{\mathcal{P}}(\mathcal{G})$, $H^1_{\mathcal{H}}(\mathcal{G})$ and $H^1_{\mathcal{R}}(\mathcal{G})$ are distinct. In addition if $\mathcal{G}$ is a homogeneous tree, the authors prove that $H^1_{\mathcal{R}}(\mathcal{G})$ does not have an atomic decomposition.
