Suppose that \(M\) is a complete connected noncompact Riemannian manifold with Ricci curvature bounded from below and positive injectivity radius. The authors give an atomic characterization for the Hardy type spaces \(X^k(M)\), introduced in a previous paper of the authors [J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 84, No. 1, 243--268 (2011; Zbl 1228.42018)]. Moreover, they prove that an atom in \(X^k(M)\) is an atom in the Hardy space \( H^1(M)\) introduced by \textit{A. Carbonaro, G. Mauceri} and \textit{S. Meda} [Ann. Sc. Norm. Super. Pisa, Cl. Sci. (5) 8, No. 3, 543--582 (2009; Zbl 1180.42008)], satisfying an `infinite dimensional' cancellation condition. As an application, they prove that the Riesz transforms of even order \(\nabla^{2k}\mathcal{L}^{-k}\) map \( X^k(M)\) into \(L^1(T_{2k}M)\), where \(L^1(T_{2k}M)\) denotes the space of all \(L^1\) sections of the bundle \(T_{2k}(M)\) of covariant tensors of order \(2k\).
