The authors consider the Cauchy problem for the 3-evolution operator $P = id/dt + A$ where $A$ is a third-order differential operator in the space variable $x$ with coefficients depending on $t$ and $x$. The principal symbol of $A$ is assumed real valued, to satisfy the assumptions of Lax-Mizohata, cf. [\textit{S. Mizohata}, J. Math. Kyoto Univ. 1, 109--127 (1961; Zbl 0104.31903)]. The authors first review results of well-posedness in different functional spaces, under corresponding assumptions on the imaginary part of the lower order symbols of $A$, cf. [\textit{M. Cicognani} and \textit{M. Reissig}, Evol. Equ. Control Theory 3, No. 1, 15--33 (2014; Zbl 1286.35086)]. The authors then present a new result in the frame of the Gelfand-Shilov spaces. Such functional frame allows very general assumptions, expressed in terms of the so-called SG-classes. Several examples are given to clarify the presentation.
